Nahyan opens 5th IDCAN dental conference in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 17th September 2015 (WAM) --- Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, today opened the two-day 5th International Dental Conference of Al Noor Hospital (IDCAN) organised in collaboration with New York University - College of Dentistry, USA.

In his opening remarks, Sheikh Nahyan said that he was pleased to be among skilled professionals who are committed to relieving pain and suffering and to improving the health of the global community.

"Dentistry may have an ancient history, but it also has a boundless future. I am convinced that Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates will welcome you again and again to these International Dental Conferences of Al Noor Hospital. To be sure, Al Noor Hospital has developed a record that justifies my conviction. By my count, this fifth dental conference is Al Noor’s eighteenth international conference for health professionals since 2006. Patients and prospective patients have to be exceedingly grateful to Al Noor for the attention that it has paid to deepening the knowledge and strengthening the confidence of medical professionals in the UAE and the Gulf region.

He added that the hospital deserves extra credit for its wisdom in collaborating with the New York University College of Dentistry, a widely admired for its deep commitment to international cooperation, does us a great service in sharing its professors and their knowledge with us.

Sheikh Nahyan welcomed Chief Medical Officer of Al Noor Hospitals Group, Dr. Georges Feghali, who joined this year and is the president of this conference.

He noted that these educational conferences play an essential role in the success of dentistry. The pace of developments in technology and treatment often leaves us all a bit breathless. This conference provides a well-organised opportunity to slow down, listen to experts, talk with your colleagues, and test your ideas with other professionals. I hope that the conference will refresh your strength so that you can take advantage of your new knowledge.

"When I contrast my first visits to dentists with my experience in today’s dentist’s chair, I rejoice in the many, many changes that have made my current visits more pleasant and successful.

"Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, we are committed to the continuous development of our entire system of health care. The oral health of our population has improved steadily although we realise that we must persistently educate the public about the vital importance of a healthy mouth. You, the professionals in the field, are the best teachers. You have a special responsibility for teaching the public in your communities that good oral hygiene is essential to good health. Fulfilling that responsibility could well be more challenging than taking advantage of new treatments and sophisticated technologies."

He said the topics of this fifth IDCAN speak to the complexity of your profession. "The different nationalities of the participants speak to the global nature of your profession. We all hope to find highly competent dental care wherever we are. You are helping to make that condition normal and are improving the health of our global community. We must help you succeed. If you have attended this conference in the past, you may remember my quoting a line of old Persian poetry that bears repeating yet again, and I quote, "The Lord that made thy teeth shall give thee bread."

"That observation implies that we are obligated to care for the teeth that God made for us. You offer the advice and perform the acts that help us satisfy that obligation. I wish you well and thank you all for ensuring the good health of your communities," concluded Sheikh Nahyan.

For his part, Dr. Kassem Alom, Founder and Deputy Chairman of Al Noor Hospitals Group, thanked Sheikh Nahyan for inaugurating the conference and the exhibition and for his continuous support towards education initiatives of Al Noor Hospitals Group.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Edgard El Chaar, Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and the Director of Advanced Education Programme in Periodontics at New York University College of Dentistry said, "Oral Health matters, in fact, regular screenings and periodontal exams can save teeth and lives. According to the American."
